NEWS FROM PENNSYLVANIA
by Vivian Luckiewicz
The Philadelphia Association of Paralegals’ Education Conference will be held this year on Friday, November 13, 2009 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority, 1101 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA. The Education Conference is an all-day event designed to offer paralegals, paralegal students and attorneys an opportunity to increase their knowledge base, explore new areas of the law, and network with their peers. With the state of the economy in mind, this year’s program offers a new Professional Development session entitled “Recession Proof Your Paralegal Career: How to Find a Job and Keep It.” Or, if you’re inclined to give back to our community, the Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program will present a session on assisting clients prevent mortgage foreclosures through the Residential Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Pilot Program. As you can probably tell, I could easily go on and on about the Conference, but I’m hoping that I piqued your curiosity a bit and that you’re now ready to read the Education Conference’s brochure on the PAP website, http://www.philaparalegals.com, under the “News and Events” tab.
The guest speaker this year is well-known in the Philadelphia legal community. Alan B. Epstein, Esquire, is the chair of Spector Gadon & Rosen’s Employment Law Practice Group. Mr. Epstein concentrates his practice in civil litigation in state and federal courts, with special emphasis on litigating claims and giving transactional advice in the areas of employment rights, civil rights, and constitutional torts. Mr. Epstein is well known for his participation in high profile litigation for individuals and corporate entities (including the representation of a young, HIV-positive attorney against a prestigious Philadelphia law firm that received national attention because of the award-winning film Philadelphia starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington and daily coverage of the trial by Court TV and Cable News Network.)
And here’s the best part: aside from the jam-packed day full of educational opportunities, the Education Conference is fun! It’s a terrific opportunity to meet and get to know paralegals who do all different types of work and maybe get an inside look at their daily routines.
I hope to see a lot of you at the Education Conference. Even if you can only attend the luncheon or a half-day session, I know that you would find something of interest. Just do it!
