The National Senior Citizens Law Center advocates before the courts, Congress and Federal agencies to promote the independence and well being of the low income elderly and the disabled.
One of the latest occurrences and I think effective measures taken was stopping the unlawful suspension of social security benefits. It is predicted that more than 80,000 are eligible to receive over $500,000 in withheld benefits. Some of the reasons for denying benefits are due to arrest warrants that were outstanding. The Social Security Administration can no longer deny benefits because of outstanding warrants. In April 2009, the SSA may only deny benefits if the warrant is for a criminal proceeding on such charges as flight escape.
If those that were in application status in January 1, 2007, or appeal decision status after August 11, 2008, they will now be eligible, even those that were denied. Those from 2000 - 2006 will be notified and given a chance to re-establish eligibility as a protective class. Over payments will stop after six (6) months and be forgiven.
It is necessary to provide SSA with your current address. It will not be in full effect until November 11, 2009.
