Help A New Paralegal Get a Career Started (or Restarted) on the Right Foot!

USLegal Paralegals Mentor Program - “Pay It Forward”

by Carole A. Bruno

Even though the Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the paralegal profession is one of the ten fastest-growing careers, new paralegal graduates or paralegals getting back to the profession just off the Mommy track, find it difficult knowing how to approach the paralegal job market. Without experience or guidance, these anxious graduates struggle to find their way and pray for someone to just give them a chance to prove themselves.

A paralegal graduate is proud of their schooling but is frustrated at the rejection they face. Our Mentor Program is designed to ask experienced paralegals in the field to take a “newbie” paralegal under their wings to mentor for a total of one or two hours. The Mentor can give specific direction based on the paralegal’s skills and the area of law they wish to specialize in, as well as offer guidance on how to break into the field. The Mentors have been through facing the job challenge, some of them many times. Many of our mentors have 15 to 25+ years’ experience.

But our Mentor Program is worthless if we don’t have volunteers to mentor these eager paralegals. It’s easy, and requires a commitment of only one or two hours to make a positive difference in a student’s or paralegal graduate’s life. And for those paralegals restarting their career, they just need an update on what’s happening since they left the profession, or perhaps ideas on how to get into a different field of law. You can handle your communications with your Mentee by email or by phone. It’s up to you.

So far, we have had many highly qualified Mentors who have made our Mentor Program successful. I list their names here to acknowledge them and for you to offer a thank you to them for paying it forward. We all are busy, but isn’t it the busy ones who get things done?

Our highly qualified paralegals who have given back to the profession through our USLegal Paralegals Mentor Program:

On behalf of the many Mentees and USLegal Paralegals, we wish to thank all of the Mentors listed below for their significant contribution to their assigned Mentees. Each one of our Mentors has changed a paralegal’s career in some significant way through their mentoring. We know this; they tell us.
