Continuing Legal Education for Paralegals
Although the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) supports paralegal continuing education (CLE), California is currently the only state with a mandatory requirement. Registered paralegals are required to take 12 hours of CLE credits, including one hour of ethics, every two years to remain in good standing.
PACE Registered Paralegals (those who have taken the PACE examination) must complete 12 hours of CLE credits, including one hour of ethics, every two years to retain their PACE status.
Other professional paralegal groups also require CLE credits to maintain their status.
Many law firms encourage and pay for paralegal CLE credits. It is estimated that as high as 96% of all firms and legal departments in corporations pay for CLE.
